Adult onset Hydrocephalus took my career and almost my life
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
9 months after I had my daughter I went completely black out blind while driving her to day care. It took 10 minutes for my vision to come back. I went from knowing absolutely nothing about my Illness to having my first brain surgery in less than 6 months. I have had about 13 brain surgeries and 5 spine surgeries. I have also had staphylococcus after surgery and meningitis due to surgery and spinal taps. I’m still fighting this 7 years after it started. I had a pseudo stroke while teaching. That was the day everything took a turn for the worse. I was a highly functioning and respected teacher. Now I am completely disabled. I have lost 80% of my vision and I cannot drive. It takes me a long time to string together intelligent sentences. Sometimes simple words won’t even come to me. The most severe part of my illness started less than a month after I finished my masters degree. I just want to be in no pain so I can be a wife, mom, and teacher again. I feel like my family has suffered because of my illness and it’s not fair to them. Especially my 8 year old. She had never known healthy mommy, only sick mommy. My body attacks my shunts and causes them to stop working properly. Currently my shunt is over draining but cannot be removed bc my ventricles have collapsed and it would be dangerous. I also have developed “Parkinson like” tremors. I am only 35 and I feel like my life has been taken away from me.
