ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
I am a 17 year old female. On a Thursday of April in 2018 I was taking my contacts out in the late afternoon. When I took my left contact out my eye began to burn severely and automatically shut. My eye was red and the lid was swollen the rest of the day. The next day the swelling went down but my eye would not open. I thought that maybe it was still just discomfort from the contact and maybe it was a reflex. I had been wearing contacts for almost 2 years and this had never been an issue but I thought maybe it some how irratated my eye. I gave it the rest of the day but it was still like that so finally I went to my pediatrician on Sunday. I went to the pediatrician because my eye doctor isn’t open on Sunday’s. They looked but told us we needed to go to an eye doctor so they called a local optometrist and I went there. He checked for scratches or anything in the eye that could cause irratation but there was nothing. I was sent to the ER but left with them requesting an MRI but no answers. I continued to go to various doctors on Long Island, including optometrists, ophthalmologists, neurologists, and Neuro ophthalmologists. I had 2 MRIs, blood tests and an eeg but all were clear. I began to go to an ophthalmologist at Weill Cornell but he also could not figure out what was going on. He was the first to say it was actually an over working muscle rather than a weakness which was helpful but we still couldn’t find a cause. We ruled out many things such as bell’s palsy and myasthenia gravis. He suggested giving Botox a try to help relax the muscle. Luckily, this worked. But unfortunately, the Botox only lasts 3 months. Although I am grateful that after 5 months of a closed eye I was finally able to open my eye, this is only a temporary fix and not a cure. This has greatly impacted my life in a negative way. I am still in high school and am constantly missing class to attend many doctors appointments and leave with still no solution. My vision is also worse when my eye is closed from trying to rely on only my right eye. I get headaches behind my left eye. My depth perception is innacurate. I want to find a cure because it was very hard going through 5 months straight as a 16 year old with having one eye shut. Lots of stares, learning to drive with horrible vision, trying to maintain my sports and school work. Botox is working but my eye continues to close every 3 months and I would like a long term solution.
