Chronic upper abdominal pain for 8+ yrs. No pattern. Multiple tests & specialists w/no diagnosis. Worse after pregnancy. Many other symptoms
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
I have been suffering with many symptoms for over 8 years. Everything seemed to get worse after I had my son 6 years ago. My chief complaint is the excruciating epigastric pain that comes with no discernible pattern. I get it randomly, several times a week, sometimes several times a day. Food doesn't make it better or worse. I will sometimes wake up because of an attack when I have not eaten in 8 or more hours. I have almost constant nausea, but no vomiting, and my appetite has decreased tremendously. I usually eat only one meal a day. I have gained weight despite not eating much.
I also have constant fatigue. No amount of sleep ever makes me feel rested. I have spurts of feeling like I have the flu, with body pain and fever, that lasts 1-2 days and then goes away. This usually starts with the skin on my whole body feeling raw and sore where touch or clothes is really uncomfortable.
I have had 4 outbreaks of a skin rash on my trunk area and upper legs that looks like a horrible peeling sunburn that lasted anywhere from 6 months to almost a year each time. Each time, one spot remains after everything else clears up. Had a biopsy on one and it came back as lichenoid dermatitis (on a remaining spot, not during a huge outbreak).
I have chronic lower back pain and my back is really sensitive to touch. I have numbness of my feet, toes and tongue and tingling in my arms and hands. I have headaches almost every day. I have severe eye pain where it feels like my eyes are going to pop out of my head and I have to press on them to get some relief.
I have very loud ringing and a whooshing sound in my right ear that is so bad that sometimes I can't sleep. I have noticed I don't hear well out of that ear (even without the ringing) and when I try to use that ear with my phone, the voices all sound really slow and robotic.
My memory has gotten noticeably bad and I struggle to find the right words during a conversation. It's like my mind just goes blank in the middle of a sentence.
I have seen many doctors and specialists, even going to Stanford to their GI clinic. I have had multiple blood tests done, testing for autoimmune disease such as lupus, RA, ankylosing spondylitis, etc. These were all normal. Tests for gluten intolerance, crohn's disease and IBS are all normal. I have had one or two blood tests with high liver enzymes.
I have had x-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds, endoscopies and gastric emptying studies, none of which showed anything significant.
I have tried gastroparesis diet, pancreatic enzymes, acid reducers and blockers, antidepressants, and anti-spasmodics. None of these has given me any relief. The only medications that I take are acetaminophen and ibruprofen for my headaches, usually no more than 2 over the counter pills a day. I am not able to take prescription pain meds as they make me extremely nauseous and cause me to vomit.
I have been frustrated and discouraged for a long time because I KNOW there is something not right, but every test comes back normal and every doctor says they don't know what it is and I will just "have to live with it." After a while, it really starts to make you think you are just going crazy and makes you just want to give up. I am asking for help because I am so tired of feeling sick. It is very rare for me to have a day where I feel good. I am still young and I feel like I am missing out on valuable time with my kids because I always feel so bad. ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated.
