Phantosmia - I experience altered smell/taste typically 25 days out of the month. It only goes away with sleep but not always.
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
I experience a "phantom" smell/taste that is a mixture of spoiled/rotten food, creek water, feces and other things I can't even identify clearly. It makes everything I eat or drink taste like it and even when I am not eating I can taste and smell it at a very heightened level. Usually when I go to sleep and wake up the next day it's gone but almost always comes back at some point throughout the day. Lately it has been lasting several days in a row. This has been going on for 14 years. I have had multiple MRIs, EKGs and other tests done but doctors have told me there isn't enough research on the topic for them to do anything and to learn to live with it. It is miserable and sometimes make me nauseous. I have read that Phantosmia (if that's really what I have) can lead to depression, suicide and schizophrenia which concerns me. My mother also occasionally experiences the smell of a lit cigarette under her nose for weeks at a time but it doesn't alter the way her food tastes. Sometimes I wonder if there is a connection between us that we both experience a phantom smell. I have tries tons of medications and nasal sprays and nothing has worked.
