- CASE FILE
I was recently diagnosed with POTS with no background as to why. All the doctors say everything looks good. But I'm sick, I've lost 20lbs.
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
In May of 2019 I started having a lot of stomach issues. My stomach would bloat up and make me look 8 months pregnant. I couldn't eat because it hurt so bad. After LOTS of Dr visits and test (blood work, abdominal ultrasound, and upper endoscopy) they said I have IBS and put me on an SSRI, that didn't help. Actually I got worse. In June and July of 2019 I became pretty confined to my bed. I wasn't getting any answers and getting sicker and sicker, I've lost 20lbs. I went from 136 to 116 in two months. I went to an endocrinologist who said my labs were consistent with 4 years ago when checked, I have hypothyroidism and hashimoto. So, that was ruled out. Since I had SVT and ablation surgery for it when I was a teenager they decided to put me on a 7 day holter monitor. Readings said it showed one 2 second pause and one arythmia, but nothing that concerned them. Now they wanted to rule out a PE because I had one in 2009, after I had my last child. They did a lower extremity ultrasound which came back normal. So they have now put me on a 30 day holter monitor. So far they say it's only showing sinus tachycardia, but at night and upon resting I have bradycardia. I had two episodes of passing out which landed me in the hospital for a couple days. They did more blood work and couldn't find anything other than slightly dehydrated and a tad low on potassium. They performed a table tilt test on me and diagnosed me with POTS. My heart rate went from 70 to 186 in three seconds upon raising the table. They put me on midodrine and said I would start feeling better. I've been home over a week and struggle to get out of bed. My legs constantly hurt, my blood pressure isn't stable, my heart rate goes up to 100 just when I sit up in bed. I can't shower alone, I can't do my hair, make-up, and I struggle getting dressed. More importantly I can't be a mom to my three kiddos. I have to depend on my 15 year old daughter to drive me to appointments because I can't drive. My husband is working a lot, he's a paramedic, to try and push through all the financial hits we are taking with Doctor visits and blood work that come back normal. I just went to a neurologist who performed some stuff in his office and said this isn't a neurological issue. I had to file for FMLA today. I'm a LMC assistant at our elementary school and I won't be able to go back when school starts. Prior too this year, I struggled with strep monthly for about two years. They said that has no relation to what is happening. I currently have white on my tongue and two doctors have said they don't know why. I'm so searching for answers as to why I went from a healthy 34 year old upbeat mom/wife to sick and confined to my bed. I keep traveling hours away to see specialist as I live in a very small town. No one has even heard of POTS here. I need help and I'll keep searching but I'm exhausted.
