- CASE FILE
TMJ/TMD Disease, which causes severe jaw & neck pain and stiffness. I have been in pain since July 2007.
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
In July 2007, I woke one morning (while on vacation) with a sore neck. After a couple of weeks with no relief I sought out medical attention, which are listed below. My original and still main symptoms are neck pain, jaw pain and general stiffness that start at the bottom of my skull and run down through my shoulders and upper thoracic.
In the beginning, I sought care from the following specialties with no relief; Multiple chiropractors, family doctor, Neurologist, Neurosurgeons, Acupuncture, Physical Therapist, Anesthesiologist, Rheumatologists, Pain Management Doctors, Oral Surgeons; for a more detailed list, see below.
My neck symptoms are: very limited range of motion in all directions, I hear cracking and popping as I move my head, and my neck muscles are extremely tight from the base of my skull to my shoulders. I have limited range of motion in my jaw as well. I used to be able to open my mouth wide enough to eat a Big Mac and now I can only fit two of my fingers width between my upper and lower teeth. My jaw aches constantly and my neck is stiff everyday. My oral surgeon has seen evidence of grinding and I now wear a night guard to protect my teeth but that does nothing to prevent the grinding and clenching. My jaw squeaks and pops when I open and close my mouth. The muscles in my mandibular jaw muscles are extremely tight. I also have some ringing in the ears. In addition, I am unable to stand for 20 minutes or more, If I do, my heals begin to hurt and all other symptoms increase in severity, my neck gets really stiff and I have to sit down or put ice on my neck for relief. See below for the list of procedures and medications I have tried. The only medication that has ever given me any measurable relief has been a Prednisone. This pain is affecting my quality of life. I used to be very outgoing, into sports, golf, bowling, and exercising. Now, I do not feel like doing any activities, I have no motivation and I am not as outgoing as I used to be. I would rather stay at home. I had even held off my marriage for several years to my wife because of the pain I was in. I have also spoken to Dr. Omid Ghalambor about other alternatives for pain and he mentioned that there is a doctor (Giancarlo Barolat, MD) in Denver, CO that has done procedures for patients with these types of issues (jaws & neck) to block the pain with a Neurostimulator/Neurostimulation Therapy for Chronic Pain (Medtronic). I have run out of options of what to do next. Prior, to this happening I was very happy person. I have tried all types of muscle relaxers, pain medications, and depression medication including: Lexapro, Cymbalta, Celebrex Xanax, anti-inflammatory medicine and Lyrica, just to name a few and none of them have worked. I cannot tolerate the pain and stiffness any longer. I hope you can help. A list of medication and procedures are listed below from each doctor.

2015-Current Dr. Gregory Yount. (TMJ/TMD Specialist) Fitted for a Occlusional Splint (Mouth Guard) - Dr. Yount has made several changes in my bite over the years to try and re-align my jaw joint, but so far it has not help that much.
2018 - I have recently tried Reiki, along with some supplement he wanted me to try. Boswellia Extract, Turmeric Curcumin, Devil's Claw, Humic & Fulvic Acids and Aklaline water. None of these have work either.
I have tried all the above and no relief yet. I have spent around $100,000 (estimate) out of my own pocket in which I still owe a lot. I make payment to several of the doctors I have seen. I would do anything, I would travel anywhere to find a cure for this horrible disease. It is very depressing to try all the above medications and procedures and non of them have worked. It's so bad, I wonder why I want to live anymore. I don't enjoy life anymore, but thank god for my wonderful wife having to put up with me and all the things we miss, because I don't feel like doing anything. Please, oh please help me!
