ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
My pain started 21 years ago out of the blue. My daughter rushed me to the hospital. They gave me pain med, told me to check with my primary doctor & sent me home. This became a repeated process over & over again until I figured out, that in the ER the cause of my pain was not going to be discovered. I was a private investigator, so my natural inclination was to dig into my symptoms and figure out what was wrong with me but I discovered, there are not always answers to a problem. During the next 21 years,I would walk into my doctor's office with a handful of articles of what I dug up could "possibly" be the cause of my pain. Bless the doctor's heart, he got to the point, he would just ask me what test I wanted done this visit. One of the visits, my doctor sent me to a neurosurgeon who found a bulge on L5 S1, didn't think it was the source of my pain but he said I would have to have that surgery eventually, so might as well have it while I was younger. I jumped at it thinking that it could possibly get rid of my pain. I went to sleep thinking I was going to be in surgery for 3 hours and put in a brace for 6 weeks. I woke up in a poured on body cast from under my armpits to the upper part of my thighs for 6 months! The titanium plate that they were going to use to hold my spine together while it fused, did not fit, so they had to do, in the words of the neurosurgeon, a "cavalry" procedure.
They counter notched the bottom part of L5 and top part of S1 & inserted a bone to fuse all together and then I was put into an induced coma for almost a week. I made the decision in hopes of finding the source of my pain. It didn't. I have had 5 surgeries, taken numerous medications and went through many many treatments, some of them quite bizarre, all to hopefully find the source of my pain but none of them did. If I had one thing to say to anyone who is just now starting on their journey to find out what is wrong with them, especially the people in chronic pain, it is this...don't panic and jump at every surgery, procedure, medication or treatment that doctors suggest "Might" relieve your pain, because you can, and usually will, end up adding more pain or more issues to your already difficult situation. Find a friend, or some advocate, who you can go to before agreeing to having any surgery, or taking any medication, and agree with that friend or advocate to allow them to insist that you take a moment to really think about it, to investigate it, find out the side effects, or......call me! I've been through it all and 21 years later, I still have the same pain and symptoms, some days mild, medium or severe. I have been in and out of the hospital with horrible pain, I have taken way too many medications and I have had some of the most bizarre treatments, all in Hopes of stopping my pain! I am tired of it all. I Hope that this program can give me and others some answers. I truly, truly, hope and pray!
