- CASE FILE
2 time heart TX survivor, now aortic Dissection/Extremely Complicated. John Ritter, Lucille Ball and Albert Einstein died from this.
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
First heart transplant (due to virus) in 1998 age 32. Widowed at same time, my husband was in a helicopter accident on the way to hospital, he died nine days later. I donated his organs.
My first donor heart lasted almost 17 years and allowed me to raise my three sons and give back as a speaker and advocate. 2nd donor heart, extremely lucky and blessed to receive in 2015, unfortunate complications, deep chest infections requiring surgeries, over two years of IV antibiotics and antifungal, 40 hyperbaric chamber treatments. Now aortic dissection is death sentence because it’s been deemed by local surgeon too risky to attempt repair. Looking for brave and experienced aortic surgeon. I am living with the knowledge that my life could and eventually will end suddenly at any time. I have uncomfortable pressure/ mild pain currently in chest. If an experienced surgeon still felt that it’s just not worth giving up my day to day existence to risk a repair I’m okay with that. However, I look the picture of health and my donor heart is doing well. It’s just difficult to give up. I can though be brave and walk my final road with grace. I just don’t want to “give up” without feeling sure that there’s really no real chance of repair.
