- CASE FILE
I've been searching for answers to severe foot pain and inflammation for over a year and a half. Even a surgery didn't work. I need answers.
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
My problems began as an extremely swollen and painful middle toe. I was originally diagnosed with gout, but bloodwork proved that wasn't it. The next diagnosis was a broken toe, but x-rays showed that was also incorrect. Over the course of a year, I had bloodwork testing for everything from Lyme disease to Celiac and every arthritic condition/marker, plus more.
I had been to 2 rheumatologists, a dermatologist, 2 podiatrists, and orthopedic surgeon, the emergency room, 2 PCPs, etc. No one had answers. Various doctors tried different anti inflammatory medications, steroids, pain meds. I had a CT scan and an MRI, which only revealed bursitis. The condition moved from just a toe to the top of my left foot and toes.
The 2nd opinion podiatrist suggested I try antibiotics and steroids again, both yielding no results. I opted in to a surgery to essentially investigate and see what would be found. All the podiatrist found was scar tissue wrapped around my nerves.
I thought I was on the mend, but the inflammation and pain are back with a vengeance. The podiatrist is stumped and has me wearing a compression sock. My most recent blood test revealed my inflammation markers are high and my ferritin, which has been high for many months, is also still elevated.
I have since switched to my 3rd PCP and she told me to try a hematologist at this point, but I feel like I'm starting this wild goose chase all over again. She basically said she isn't sure what this could be, so who can help me?
I have spent hours of my life and thousands of dollars since February 2018, just trying to find an answer and a cure. It is taking away from my ability to be a mother, a wife, and just an active participant in my day to day life. My condition has made walking a difficult and painful task.
I am desperate for help and answers. I don't even know where else to turn anymore.
