- CASE FILE
At 23, I continuously experience episodes paralysis and migraines - only throughout the left-side of my body.
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
I have been chronically ill since I was a baby. After a Nissen Fundoplication at 9 weeks old and a diagnosis of Lyme Disease at 5 years old, I have continued to suffer from chronic illness, pain, and health complications. By the time I turned 23, I have had an appendectomy, 3 endoscopies, a colonoscopy, and countless MRIs, X-rays, CT scans, and other procedures - in a hope to ease my health battle.
My chronic health issues have impacted my ability to thrive as a child, teen, and young adult. During the end of my time at college, I barely graduated, as a result of such terrible migraines that caused vision loss - only on the left side of my head. Since graduating my college, I was forced to move back home and was unable to start a job - like every other young adult my age. In the past year, I have been diagnosed with Reflux, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, T1 Narcolepsy, Migraines with Aura, Fibromyalgia, and more.
While I have worked with doctors to ease some of the symptoms I have been dealing with as a young adult, I have yet to find an answer for my recent (and most pressing) health battle yet.
A year ago, I was diagnosed with Serotonin Syndrome after a psychiatrist prescribed too high of a dosage of my medication. Leading up to this diagnosis, I gained 30 pounds, due to swelling and water retention. Two days later, I was hospitalized with left-sided paralysis and treated for stroke - which did not end up being the case.
Since I was hospitalized, I have continued to experience episodes paralysis throughout the left-side of my body & face on a monthly basis. In addition, episodes are accompanied with severe low blood sugar that refuses to stabilize - even with increased caloric intake.
In between such episodes, I have fevers with hot/red hands, feet, and ears almost on a daily basis - something that is incredibly painful. In addition, I have had to come to the reality that I am dealing with increasing muscle twitching, speech complications, and memory loss. My memory has continued to worsen over the past couple months, and I am now left with little-to-no recollection of graduating college - something that occurred barely a year ago.
While I have tried medications to ease the daily burden of chronic pain and fevers, my body has not positively responded to anything yet. While my GP has worked hard to help me get to a more stable place, we have yet to discover the cause of the paralysis, tingling, migraines - and why they only occur on the left side of my body.
