I have been told I have lipodema. An adipose fat disorder which causes diseased fat to grow around the lymphatic system and strangle it out
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
After 30 years of asking, "what is wrong with me?" and hearing "you need to lose weight", I finally found a name for what I have. It's called Lipodema (aka: Lipoedema), classified as diseased fat that gathers around the lymphatic system and prevents it from functioning. It causes leg swelling and pain. I am disproportionately large on my bottom half and very normal, even small on the top. Lipodema is not affected by diet and exercise. I've been doing crossfit and the keto diet for over a year and even after losing 75 pounds of normal fat, my legs are unaffected. The only solution is management. I can have lymph sparing liposuction (also called WAL - water assisted lipo) to remove the diseased fat cells without damaging the lymph system, but the health insurance doesn't cover it, because with the word "liposuction" in the description, they consider it cosmetic. Doctors are generally unaware of this condition and so it is largely undiagnosed, with up to 10% of women suffering from this adipose disorder without knowing it. They suspect it has something to do with hormones, but have no idea where it comes from. It does appear to be hereditary. Even with the procedures, there is a chance of reoccurance. It's affecting my lymph, my veins, and I'm at high risk for DVT from the vein damage. I'd love to be researched and also raise awareness for what is actually quite common (I see it all over the place now that I'm aware of it) and I'd love for the medical community to become aware that this exists! I'd also love to be cured!!!!
