- CASE FILE
5 years of abdominal/gastric pain, with 3-day cycle of unusual yellow or red tissue discharged separately from normal bowel movements.
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
Five years ago, I was awakened by a severe, sharp gastric pain, followed by nausea, diarrhea and gas, after which I felt well for the rest of the day. I endured several months of these daily symptoms, during which I changed my diet (low fiber, simple proteins) and consumed acidophilus, which helped a little. The pain became less severe, but the other problems continued.
A 3-day cycle became apparent: Every third day, something comes out of me that does not resemble a normal bowel movement or diarrhea - it is a yellow, stringy substance or a reddish brown substance. The gas which accompanies this is powerful but odorless, and this material is accompanied by a great deal of thick mucus. I do have normal bowel movements as well, but they occur separately. My body does seem to be processing food normally. This discharge is entirely separate and in addition to that. After the discharge occurs, I feel fine - the discomfort is only before and during its emergence (between 6am and 1pm, in a series of three bowel movements).
I have seen several doctors and had a colonoscopy, blood work, and laboratory tests including for trichinosis and other parasites. Laboratory workers have asked me to provide them with samples of the unusual material, but they don't know what it is.
I am 73 years old, and I was 68 when this problem started. I was a perfectly healthy person with no chronic illnesses, no medications, and a healthy lifestyle and diet, with one normal bowel movement per day. About a year before the problem began, I contracted C.difficile by visiting a relative in a hospital. I was treated, cured, and had been without any symptoms for 12 months before the new syndrome began.
