ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
Bietti’s Crystalline Dystrophy - we know that BCD is inherited primarily in an autosomal recessive fashion. The symptoms of BCD include: crystals in the cornea (the clear covering of the eye); yellow, shiny deposits on the retina; and progressive atrophy of the retina, choriocapillaries and choroid (the back layers of the eye). This tends to lead to progressive night blindness and visual field constriction. BCD is a rare disease - primarily affecting male asians. At this point, this 50 year old caucasion woman is nearly totally blind. . There is currently a meeting planned between Japanese scientists and scientists at Colombia University (NY) the week of August 11th. It is a first! Discussion will be about a promising treatment that is nearing ready for human trial. It could be a breakthrough. Perhaps it is the type of story that Chasing the Cure could be a part of as 'the cure' is in discussion and ready to be trialed. This woman will be in attendance to learn about the possibility and potentially get in line to be part of the initial trial.
