ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
My son became sick 5 years ago and ended up hospitalized for rhabdomyolysis. He previously was a very healthy competitive hockey player who was rarely sick. This hospitalization started the journey of a very long process to eventually be correctly diagnosed with Lyme Disease. But this diagnosis took over 2 years to receive. He was initially diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and several local doctors gave treatment to my son but the benefits were never lasting. He would have a terrible week, a bad week, a little better week and a decent week—our hopes would get up that we were on the right path to getting him healthy again, and then the cycle of weeks would start over again. Nobody could give a reason or an answer for the cycle. We know realize that it was because of Lyme Disease (LD) and the battle for healthy cells being taken over by LD. We even spent a week at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN because they are the Mecca of POTS. They confirmed the POTS diagnosis and missed the LD diagnosis. Unfortunately by the time LD was accurately diagnosed, my son had been sick for a long time and the damage caused to his body by LD was pervasive. The treatments he has received have helped him, as in he is no longer passing out 6-8 times a day, but he is still quite sick. He has enrolled in college two times and had to medically withdrawal both times. The second time in college involved being back on the ice playing DIII hockey but unfortunately he was too sick to continue and once again hockey became a fleeting desire. Our local LD doctor met a doctor from Spain at a LD conference in the US almost a year ago. This doctor has been having much success in his treatment of LD and we began pursing treatment. The two of us recently spent two weeks in Spain for my son to receive the initial treatment in their protocol and will be returning in October for an 8 week treatment. We thought it would be interesting for your show to document his treatment and why we need to travel outside of the US for the most beneficial treatment.
