20 years old and suffering from constant nausea, burning throat, gas, and bloating
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
I’m 20 years old and have suffered from nausea and burning in my throat for several years now. My symptoms are getting progressively worse. I have seen four GI doctors who have tried a few different PPIs and have tested me for many things, but I continue to get worse. Currently I am diagnosed with GERD, gastritis, and Fructose Malabsorption. I have had an endoscopy, which was how I found out about gastritis. I am negative for H-Pylori. PPIs seem to help with heartburn after eating a meal, but the burning in my throat is something different. It comes out of nowhere, usually about one-two hours after I have eaten something or when I wake up in the morning. It will last for 2-3 days (sometimes more) straight with severe nausea, bloating, and gas. During these spells I can barely eat anything and medicines like Gaviscon, Zantac, and Pepto don’t even touch it. When I'm not having having a burning spell, I am queasy/nauseous most of the time. I am constantly taking peppermint oil to help with my severe nausea and I can barely make it through work and school. I never feel good after I eat, no matter what. When I'm not feeling nauseous, I have excessive gas, bloating, and abdominal pain. I have drastically changed my diet and don’t eat or drink anything acidic or irritating, water only. I don’t have coffee, chocolate, sauces, fried foods, etc. My diet is very limited out of fear of eating something that will cause a flare up. I also don’t smoke and I am very underweight.
It might be helpful to mention that I also have scoliosis and sinus issues. I often have a runny or stuffy nose and get dull headaches.
I just want my life back. I am an active college student and my hopes of pursuing my career are becoming more and more bleak.
