I have pancreas divisum My main bile duct isn’t there Which has caused pancreatitis attacks There’s nothing more the dr can do except meds
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
About four years ago I started getting pancreatitis attacks and started getting hospitalized for weeks at a time with tests but no explanation for two years. Because of that I was not treated very fairly in the beginning. The doctors finally discovered that it was cause from pancreas divisum. Pancreas divisum is a common congenital anomaly (an anomaly that is present at birth) of the pancreatic duct(s). The pancreas is a deep-seated organ located behind the stomach. One of its functions is to produce enzymes that are important for the digestion of food in the intestine. My main bile duct never formed... so the Treatment. Pancreas divisum in individuals with no symptoms does not require treatment. But that was not me so the doctors tried several things....Treatment of those with symptoms varies and has not been well established. A surgeon may attempt a sphincterotomy by cutting the minor papilla to enlarge the opening and allow pancreatic enzymes to flow normally. Which they did try plus they tried to stent my small bile duct two different times but it caused major pain and caused off the charts pancreatitis attack. I met with a surgeon in Seattle that worked at the Mayo Clinic and he said he could rebuild me a new bile duct and then said he couldn’t... and my new gi just says to stick with my diet and my meds and that’s all we can do. But at this point I’m on 1mg of Clonazepam, 20mg Paxil, 30mg Baclofen, 50mg Topiramate, 24mg ondansetron, 8mg Dilaudid a day. It’s been a few months that I haven’t had any attacks now so it looks like we got the meds right but it’s hard to live a real life, and to be a real mother to my pre-teen son. I spend a lot of time in bed and then I have a hard time sleeping so my whole sleep schedule gets all messed up. All and all the worst thing is the pain of it all, and the nausea. The meds manage it but without them it’s completely unbearable. I have been to pain clinics and had pain blocks shots in my stomach and my back. I have also tried acupuncture. I have given up drinking up any and all alcohol. And I have a pretty strict diet. Because my stomach will not break down most foods, I have to be very careful of what I eat or I will end up throwing up. I pretty much spend the day nauseous. And I’ve tried other meds than the ondansatron but it works better than any of the other ones.
