- CASE FILE
I am a 37 year old single mother with a long history of chronic all over pain, fatigue, migraines & damage to my hands due to an antibiotic!
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
A year ago, I was given the antibiotic Cipro for a bladder infection. Within an hour of the first dose I was starting to have pain in my right wrist. It took almost the full course of the prescription to put together the connection between the increasing pain in my hands, arms and at the time the bottom of my feet. Everytime I put any pressure on my feet it felt like I was pushing on a very bad bruise. Since then I've lost the majority of strength in my arms and hands, some days I cannot twist open a bottle of liquid or brush my hair. I am hypersensitive to the weather change, humidity causes a cold burning in every joint from the elbows down and my fingers feel like they are going to explode from the swelling. My joints start to ache and burn hours before any sort of rain or snow fall. If I lift anything heavier than 5lbs it feels like the muscles in my arms and hands exploded in pain. If they get cold or wet it feels like my skin is being stabbed with ice picks. My hands are always throbbing in pain and this weird pulse like burning. I was tested for everything under the sun when this all started including RA and other type of arthritis and everything came back normal except for the ESR and CRP were very high. At first my doctor thought I had polymyalgia rheumatica, but my Rheumatologist ruled that out because of my age and diagnosed me with ciprofloxacin poisoning. My doctors and pain clinic acknowledge the poisoning, however, they don't know how to treat or help me with the spreading pain. Some days the pain is so bad that it will keep me awake all night and the lack of sleep makes it harder to deal with the pain. Around the start of the year, I started having memory issues. I am starting to struggle to find the words while in conversations. I will forget what I'm doing in the moment and have to back track to remember. My parents have to remind me about appointments for myself or my daughter because I will forget. I only take 4 medications: Sulindac twice a day, Gabapentin once a day, Flexeril up to twice a day and Tramadol 1 pill 4 times a day. If I don't keep my medicine on the table directly next to me I will forget to take it.
On top of all that I have diagnosed Fibromyalgia. That means chronic pain in my body. I also have many symptoms of Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and POTS, but finding doctors who are willing to listen and not just assume I am looking for pills is difficult. Because of the pain in my hands and arms radiating up in to my shoulders it aggravates the Fibro pain in my shoulders and neck. If I try and do something as simple fold laundry it will cause such intense pain in my shoulder, upper back and neck that it will trigger a chronic migraine and force me to lay down until I can calm everything down to a tolerable level of pain. It's common for me to have 3-4 migraines a week.
I don't expect to be pain free, but I can't keep living like this. I just want to be able to take my daughter out to do thing like a parent should be able to and not have her worry about how much pain mom is in!
