My jaw and facial muscles involuntarily contract and pull. It’s like a puppeteer is pulling strings attached to my muscles pulling upwards.
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
Since a 2004 car accident, I have had one medical issue after another. I became disabled and lost my successful career in Training and Organizational Development. Most distressing is the involuntary face and jaw muscle/ fascia pulling that spirals into nausea jams migraines in seconds. It happens when I have a conversation longer than 15 minutes, when a barometric pressure change (low) occurs or under even minor stress.
The accident fractured a back lower molar, which had to be removed and led to osteonecrosis of the jawbone, that stabbed thru my mouth weekly and had to be surgically filed to the soft tissue twice. Six months of this treatment left me with chronic myofascial pain, as my face and jaw were exhausted. I was diagnosed with Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD], Disarticulated jaw discs and Chronic Myofascial Pain. I follow a gluten, soy, dairy and mostly lectin/ sugar free diet to fight inflammation.
Nothing I have done in 15 years has stopped the involuntary pulling. I am on disability and have only been able to do part time admin consulting. I haven’t been able to work since my back required a fourth surgery last year. Debilitating pain has since developed from scar tissue and arthritic changes to L1 and L5 discs and throughout the L2-4 fusion area. My jaw pain has been treated through an Oralfacial Pain Diplomate and now Board-Certified Oralfacial Pain dentist for years, who took me through countless trigger point injections, has made two bite support splints (a stronger one was needed a few years ago), sent me to an excellent jaw PT who worked inside my mouth, and to an orthodontist (I had only one tooth touching after the accident and had to wear braces for years). Finally, he had me see a surgeon who performed arthrocentesis. I am on numerous pain medications and supplements and had extensive bloodwork. Everything helped; nothing lasted.
My Pain Dr thinks my neck is involved and did nerve blocks on my C3-7 vertebrae, followed by radio frequency lesioning in April. He said this could provide up to a year’s relief. It helped tremendously for a couple months but caused extreme nerve flare-up that itched so badly I scratched a rash into my neck, I am reluctant to do another RF, even though it took two RFs to calm my Occipital neuralgia after the accident, I had a concussion from the accident, too.
Other Conditions I have had or have now include:
. Severe Tinnitus, Meneire’s Disease, Chronic ideopathic hives, excema, osteopenia, fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, weight gain, ankle and foot fractures, anxiety, depression and chronic cysts in the left eyelid requiring multiple surgeries in the past two years.
. We are financially strapped with all my medical expenses, I am stressed about finding a warmer climate with fewer barometric pressure fluctuations to reduce the many days of suffering I currently experience. My husband is wonderful but years of constant medical issues take a toll on a person. We have no social life because I can’t function much after mid afternoon and I can’t talk without suffering, I have had therapy with a biofeedback specialist, and a therapist specializing in patients with chronic pain. I meditate daily and do chair yoga weekly as I can. But the stress outweighs all of these interventions. Only a permanent solution to this involuntary puppet master and give us back our lives. Any help would be so appreciated.
I’m sort, but I can’t record a video for you without hurting my jaw.
