I was the first person in my local Planned Parenthood to get the Depo Provera shot 27 years ago, I have not had a menstrual cycle since.
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
At age 16 I was the first person in my hometown of Indianapolis to receive the Depo Provera shot. That was 27 years ago. I haven’t had a period since. I have had two surgeries, several biopsies, multiple MRI’s, and seen many specialist. I have all the symptoms of a Pituitary Tumor, but the MRI’s ruled that out. There is new research coming out that the Depo Provera drug can cause an autoimmune disorder in the pituitary gland. They also believe that the shot can trigger other autoimmune diseases, which would also explain the two confirmed autoimmune diseases that I have. Because I was one of the first to get these symptoms after taking the Depo shot I believe I would be a good candidate to study what happens overtime to women that the shot impacted in this way.
I have not been officially diagnosed with an autoimmune pituitary disease, I self diagnosed. I want women to hear my story so they can make an informed decision before putting these hormone altering chemicals in their body. I want to help teach them that the implant and IUD’s also have a similar chemicals in them that can cause the same reactions. We don’t know enough about this topic, there is very little research, and most doctors don’t even know about it. I would love to hear from doctors or anyone that has experience with this and finally get an official diagnosis.
Birth control is one of the greatest inventions for women ever, but it has ruined my life. Back then they didn’t know that the side effects could be this consequential, but we know now and every woman should be educated on it.
The scariest part is that it’s progressive, I get new strange symptoms all the time. It’s really hard to tell what’s important enough to worry about and what’s just something else I now must live with.
Autoimmune diseases don’t have cures, they have treatments. I’m in pain every day and as I get worse I find I have fewer and fewer good days. The symptoms I’m dealing with are joint pain, Vasculitis, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, swelling in my eyes, swelling in my joints, bloating, osteoporosis, blurring vision, heart palpitations, insomnia, strange unexplained lumps in my neck and elbow, swollen lymph nodes that never go down, IBS, headaches, temperature sensitivity, short temper, rupturing cysts, fibromyalgia, yo-yoing weight, hypothyroidism, hypo parathyroid, kidney pain, DDD, and high cholesterol. I’m sure I am forgetting something on my crazy symptoms list because some come and go. If you know anything or anyone that can help I would be forever grateful. I used to be an energetic, happy, creative, teacher wife and mom. I just want to be that person again! Thanks for your help, support, and prayers.
