ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
My sister has achalasia. It has progressed over the years to her esophagus losing all elasticity. Because she was misdiagnosed in the beginning and did not find out until 2005 that her disease was Achalasia, she is at a stage where there is nothing that the Dr's can do. She has had many experimental procedures but it has led to so much scar tissue that she is now on a feeding tube. Yet, most of her feedings do not agree with her stomach. She is still searching for nourishment that she can tolerate.
Symptoms are: food/liquid getting stuck in her throat, followed by vomiting. She is malnourished, causing dental problems. Her sleep is interrupted, she is forgetful. Her sense of smell is extreme and many smells make her sick. My sister has gone from the strongest person I know to someone that has to fight to make it through a day. Her biggest hope in telling about this rare disease is to make individuals aware about the symptoms so they can get the proper help in the beginning.
