Sudden rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, gi problems, and unexplained urinary incontinence starting at 16.
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
Rheumatoid arthritis/ fibromyalgia: I started getting cramps in my muscles/joints around 16, thought it was from playing sports, as I played softball and volleyball, but they just kept getting worse until I was unable to move that muscle completely without horrible pain. If it was in my leg/hip I wouldn’t be able to walk. Pediatrician said it might be rheumatoid arthritis, which does not run in the family. I went and saw a rheumatologist who denied that was the problem, so from there I saw a pain management specialist. She diagnosed me with fibromyalgia. After a while of seeing her with no improvement from meds, physical therapy, or even acupuncture, she recommended I see the rheumatologist again. She would not see me, said I was fine. Got a second opinion from a local rheumatologist who confirmed I indeed had ra and finally got me set on medication. During this long process, there would be days, even weeks, where some part of my body would basically shut down and I couldn’t walk or function. I had to be picked up and was in severe pain just to go to the rest room or get back in bed. Even moving in bed to adjust myself hurt. All of this happening within 2 years. And still to this day, i have not been able to fix my meds to be in remission like so many others with this disease. It still affects my everyday life. Some days I still can’t get to work because I’m in too much pain. My hands and fingers swell up horribly and most days I can’t even make a fist. I go back and forth with losing my hand strength and a while later regaining some and finally being able to open my drinks myself, right back to nothing. Some says I can’t even open my medication! At 20 this is taking a horrible toll on my life and no one understands where this came from. It’s not in my known family history. And why did it hit so hard. Ra is a progressive disease, not a sudden one.. Urinary incontinence: I have had for the longest time, I honestly cannot remember when it even started happening. I lose all bladder control when laughing, sometimes as soon as I realize I have to pee it will hit and no matter how hard I try to stop it, it will not. The earliest I can remember having it is in 4th grade. Still having it as a 20 year old is very embarrassing. During the process of seeing the first rheumatologist I saw multiple urologists. With me being young, my mother would not allow any invasive procedures, so doctors would try their best, but could not figure out what was wrong and what cause this to happen. Along with physical therapy for the ra, they incorporated therapy for bladder control as well and it only semi helped. But doctors are still confused as to why this happened suddenly. I have had a lower back mri, which showed my spinal cord. They believe it might have been pinched or had damage, but it was perfectly fine. It is still unknown why this is happening. I also have hydradinitus supperativa, which is severe cystic acne. It normally affects under arms, inner thighs and your bottom. Over the past year it has spread horribly to my breasts, sides and even my stomach. I’ve tried everything my doctors, and even dermatologists have recommended. Nothing has helped and I’m left with painful blisters and bumps, that pop randomly and have gotten golf ball size on numerous occasions, along with horrible scars everywhere. I recently have been having horrible problems with my esophagus as well. I went to the er for it because it was causing me so much pain in my chest and back area. I can feel it being swollen. It’s been making it hard to eat or even drink. It’s like I can’t swallow sometimes no matter how hard i try. And with the swelling, it makes me nauseous, even just sitting there doing nothing. If you could please please help me figure out what is going on with my body. I don’t understand why any of it’s happening like it is
