- CASE FILE
Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). Causes scarring of the lungs at the alveoli, severly inhibiting gas exchange to oxygenate the blood.
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
There a number of symtoms, but they tend to lead to other (and incorrect) diagnosis. There are 2 drugs (anti-fibrotics) that reduce the progression of the disease by about 50%, but no way to stop or cure it. I have been diagnosed for 6 1/2 years and been on one of these drugs for 5 years. I am not yet on oxygen. The only cure for me is a new set of lungs, I am hoping that my grandchildren will never have to deal with this condition. A good source of information is www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org.
