My Aunt got Lyme Disease many years back and has been fighting for her life ever since. Please help.
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
I created this profile for my Aunt. She has Lyme Disease and is now fighting for her life (or at least I hope she is still fighting, some days I'm not even sure I hope that anymore). Before Lyme, she was very active, worked at an elementary school full time, volunteered in the community, avid camper, terrible euchre player, nicest most wonderful person. Lyme has since caused her to lose the ability to walk, eat by herself, handle basic every day tasks. She's trapped and I am so scared for her and worried about her. All diseases are scary, but Lyme appears to not only be a horrible disease, it is also caught up in some ridiculous conspiracy where it is not recognized in the medical insurance industry as a disease which can cause this kind of harm. This means that many of her treatments and medical needs are not covered by any insurance. Some insurance companies are literally denying coverage for treatments that other people with recognized disabilities get because they say Lyme cannot cause a person to be disabled in this manner. I wish the person denying that coverage had to deliver that news to her in person. To tell her from her wheelchair that she is not recognized as disabled and to see first hand that her response is literally limited to a shake of her head because the rest of her body has basically quit working due to Lyme Disease. It is horrifying to think that we are living in a world that treats human beings this way. She has tried countless procedures and treatments with no success, most paid for out of pocket. I'm not even sure at this point if she even wants to keep trying and I could never blame her for that, but, of course, she does not have the right to end her life if she does not want to live anymore. The last thing I want is to lose my Aunt, a person who raised me at a certain point in my life, a person who I still remember as the most loving, joyous, and amazing woman, but if the society we live in is going to refuse to help her or continue trying to save her from this awful disease, I don't want to see her suffer any longer. This isn't a call to the world to let my Aunt pass away peacefully, it is a call for help to save her and allow her to live peacefully for a long long time and be rid of this horrible life-defining disease. I know there are many out there in this position and that this not only affects the person, but their friends, family, community. I wish the best to all of you and hope you are able to do everything you can for your significant others in their time of need. I truly hope someone finds a cure so that this doesn't have to continue decimating lives, most especially, my Aunt. Please help.
