Myastenia Gravis is a neuromuscular and auto immune disease
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
My father suffers from a rare disease called Myasthenia Gravis. This is a neuro muscular and auto immune disease. This disease causes muscle weakness and shortness of breath, and it is hard to diagnose, unless you see a neurologist. In the case of my father he was diagnosed in 2007, at first it affected his vision where everything was blurry, but eventually it spread to muscle weakness and shortness of breath. He has been hospitalized at least 20 times since he was first diagnosed. There is no known cure for this. He has however in the past received a treatment that helps to keep it in check, the treatment is known as a plasma exchange or plasmaphereses. basically it takes out the bad antibodies that attack his muscles. However this past year he has started a new treatment called Solaris, he has to receive this through an IV every 2 weeks, and it seems to be helping him. The funny thing is his brother was diagnosed with the same disease, but it is not suppose to be hereditary. I would really like to see if you would consider talking about this on your show. I am sure there are people out there that have this disease and would like to know that there are others out there like them. My father likes talking to student nurses about this because as mentioned it is considered a rare disease. Thank you for your consideration.
