- CASE FILE
For four years I have been suffering with dry eye disease that blurs my vision and that has failed to respond to any treatment.
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
For four years I have suffered with an unknown medical condition that has given me severely dry eyes. I woke up one morning and my eyes were dry and my vision was blurry. I have tried numerous treatments and seen numerous doctors to try and get some relief without success. I have seen at least four ophthalmologists and tried every available treatment to try and fix my dry eyes, all without success. My eyes no longer make tears and as a result I have blurry vision with mucus in my eyes.
In the course of my health journey I was diagnosed with gallstones and I had my gallbladder removed, thinking that would be the cure to helping me make tears. Alas, it was not. Continuing to try and find answers, I found out I had Celiac Disease. My hope was, if I removed gluten from my diet it would heal my eyes. Yet, after almost two years of eating gluten free, my eyes are no better.
I have also suffered with other mysterious symptoms that will come and go, sometimes going away for weeks or months at a time, which include trouble breathing, stomach bloating, and tingling / muscle twitches in my hands and feet. I also consistently have yellow stools that have air bubbles rising out of them.
I have been to at least four opthamologists, four gastroenterologists as well as a rheumatologist and yet every time my tests come back normal. I have been tested for celiac disease markers (which would show if I was eating gluten) and these are normal, Sjogren's Syndrome (test was normal) as well as a host of autoimmune diseases that could cause dry eyes and stomach problems. I have had a colonoscopy and endoscopy which were normal, except for Celiac. I have had a capsule endoscopy that was mostly normal, but showed some mild inflammation of unknown origin. I have been tested for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth numerous times with normal test results.
Around the time that all of this started I was on a course of antibiotics for a sinus infection. I also developed new allergies to a bunch of things I was never allergic to before, including dogs and cats.
I have tried numerous medications and treatments for my dry eye, including Restasis, Xiidra, steroid eye drops, analogous serum tears (drops made of my own blood), amniotic fluid eye drops, TrueTear (a device that is supposed to shock your eyes into making more tears), Lipiflow, Miboflo, scleral contact lenses and more I cannot remember.
The dry eye severely impacts my quality of life as my vision is blurry from it and I get pain and mucus in my eyes. I don't drive anymore due to the dry eye and how it affects my vision. I am desperate for a cure so I can move on with my life.
