ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
My 11 year old son has recurring fevers, they occur every 4 weeks and reach 103 degrees and last 3-5 days. This started at 9 months old, with all sorts of testing, one Dr. felt it was Lymes and he had a positive test for Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Multiple other doctors say it’s not Lymes. At 3 years old, we got his tonsils out, all fevers stopped for 7 years. Last September he got a fever the second week of school and they have returned every four weeks since. This time it’s a little different because he is old enough to talk and explain things. Normally a day or two before he will feel slightly bloated and his appetite will reduce, then the fever comes.
In addition to his pediatrician, we have seen pediatric infectious disease, pediatric rheumatology, pediatric GI. He has had genetic testing for Periodic Recurring Fever syndrome, CT scans, chest X-rays, ultra sounds, endoscopy, colonoscopy and endless amounts of blood work.
No one will will do more comprehensive tick related testing, I paid out of pocket for a Micro Biologist to examine his blood, she identified two micro bacteria in his blood stream that are tick related. The doctors at Childerns Hospital in DC and Johns Hopkins disagree there are micro bacteria. BUT, that’s the ONLY specifically identified issue that hasn’t been completely ruled out.
By luck only, I have been referred to a DR. who is Lymes/Tick literate, we just started seeing him. He does NOT think he has Lymes, but another Tick related bacteria, Borrelia- Borrelia relapsing fevers. We have just started treatments, I have no idea if it will work, but I have done everything and feel this is my last resort.
My son missed nearly 40 days of school last year, I miss so much work, it gets to be so stressful. The not knowing and feeling helpless is heart wrenching. It’s a part time job making sure all of the Doctors have copies of all blood work an labs. This new DR. Isn’t covered by insurance, so the expense is starting to add up.
I’m praying this DR. Helps, I just want my son to be healthy.
