Cancer will NOT win! My sister has beat Hodgkin's Disease 3 times. She refuses to let the long term side effects of chemo and radiation win.
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
I am writing to you on behalf of my sister, Denise , who is a cancer survivor. (She has given me full permission to contact you.) We are reaching out to you in search of answers, help and support for conditions that she currently lives with, resulting from years of aggressive and debilitating treatment for three occurrences of Hodgkin’s Disease.
Denise was first diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease in 1982, when she was 15 years old. At that time, her diagnosis was mis-staged, which resulted in years of recurring cancer and cancer treatments. She received massive amounts of chemo and radiation treatments for three Hodgkin’s occurrences, culminating in an Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant in 1990 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital.
As a result, you can imagine the multitude of health problems that she now has as an adult. She has significant radiation damage to her heart, which resulted in needing to have an artificial heart valve approximately ten years ago. She also been diagnosed with diabetes, arthritis, fibromyalgia and a compromised immune system, to name just a few of her major health complications. As a result of her immune system being damaged from the bone marrow transplant, she also needs to receive intravenous treatments of IVIG(Intravenous Immunoglobulin), which are done monthly, to help boost her immune system.
The purpose of this letter though, is that in the past year, Denise has started experiencing symptoms that have made it impossible for her to work or have any quality of life at all. The symptoms are complicated and debilitating, and while she has been to countless doctors, she has not been able to find one that can piece the puzzle together and find a cure or an answer for what is happening to her. She is currently suffering from chronic pain, shortness of breath, periods of dizziness, confusion, bouts of extremely high blood pressure, fatique, coughing up blood, electrical type impulses in her face, neck and arms, periods of not being able to walk, muscle spasms in her chest and neck making it difficult to breathe, charlie-horses all over her body and a general feeling of not getting enough oxygen, to which she attributes confusion. Additionally, doctors have told her that her heart valve is leaking and not functioning properly, but no one has yet to determine if that has anything to do with what is happening to her. She has also been told that she has an infection in her teeth, which have been damaged beyond repair from chemo and radiation treatments. She has spent thousands of dollars filling, capping, crowning and bridging teeth, only to lose them down the road due to irreparable damage suffered from past cancer treatments. She has been told that the teeth that are left are infected and need to be replaced. Could this be affecting her heart, and be part of her problems???
No one seems to know!
That’s why I am writing to you. My sister is the bravest, kindest person I know. As you can see, she has been dealing with damage from extensive cancer treatment her whole life but has NEVER given up. In fact, she has made it her life’s mission to help people, even becoming an RN and working tirelessly to give patients the care that she knows people who are sick need and deserve. It is killing her that she is no longer able to fulfill her life’s mission of helping people and giving back to the medical community, but she can barely leave the house, let alone do her nursing job.
We are desperate for answers! It hurts to watch my sister, who has essentially spent her whole life fighting this horrible disease and its debilitating side effects, ready to give up. We simply won’t allow it. We know there is a doctor out there who can put the pieces of this complicated puzzle together and give her her quality of life back. Please help my sister find the answer she so desperately needs, before it is too late.
Thank you for your support. We look forward to hearing from you.
