- CASE FILE
Since 2009 I have suffered from an inflammed lower spinal chord that was damaged from an unknown virus according to 3 separate hospitals.
ABOUT THIS CASE FILE
I am seeking help to see if this program can help me. In June of 2009, I was hospitalized for numbness and tingling from my belly button down for 2 days - no pain. I received an EEG, MRI, and spinal tap and blood tests with nothing found and all feeling went back to normal within 48 hours. August 8, 2009, I woke up with stabbing pain in my hips. When I got out of bed i fell as I had no feeling from my left knee down. I was hospitalized for 10 days in a local hospital with a urinary tract infection, put on an antibiotic with steroids, and dilaudid along with being catherized. Within 12 hours i was numb from the waist down...starting with tingling. Again had another MRI, EEG, and spinal tap and blood tests and found nothing. I was transferred to the University of Chicago hospital for the next 8 days in which they repeated the MRI, EEG, and spinal tap...added in an EMG along with blood tests. They found damage to my lower spinal chord with MRI -looked like a pair of owl eyes as they called it along with my white blood cell count having gone down. My immune system was attacking itself -had an autoimmune issue. They decided to try IVIG ....it helped as I slowly had feeling come back to my lower half over the next 5 days. I had to go through physical therapy to learn how to walk again. I cannot run or jump to this day as my left ankle reflex is just gone. I have nerve damage down my left leg -visible muscle dystrophy. Neuropathy in both my legs, more on the left. muscle twitching in legs, restless legs. Cannot spread toes in left foot, cannot push foot down on left foot. If i walk on ice I will fall as I cannot feel the ice with my left foot, its like I am constantly walking on cotton. I also have pain off and on in my joints-hands, knees, elbows. I get lower back pain easy and have pulled muscles alot with lower back. MRI's have shown buldging discs in my lower back. I've tried traction therapy which helped for a period of time. I still receive IVIG monthly as it supposedly helps to reduce the inflammation in my lower spinal chord. Ive tried going without it and my symptoms started coming back again. I still have bladder and bowel issues. I have accidents when I can't reach the bathroom right away. Its always an urgency for me to get to a bathroom. I did go got MAYO clinic in 2010. They actually told me to stop taking IVIG. I've seen urologists who conclude I have a smaller than average bladder, and nothing phsyically wrong with it -my neurologist said he considers it a neurogenic bladder. MS was ruled out, Guillien Barre syndrome was ruled out. All 3 hospitals say that an unknown virus attacked my lower spinal chord and now I have just maintained as far as i can and will likely have to rely on IVIG the rest of my life. My neurologist uses CIDP as a diagnosis form me to receive IVIG. I still take Levothyroxine for my thyroid and am on Amitriptiline for the chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. Alot of the anxiety and depression comes from the simple things in life I can no longer do such as run or jump, along with the many accidents I have with the bathroom. I have alot of anxiety when the weather is cold and related to ice because of the many falls i have taken that hurt my back and knees further. I cannot be the mother I once was or the active person I once was. I was a runner that coached softball for my daughters. i cannot run and have had to give up coaching. I've had to leave work in the middle of the day due to accidents.
